What is the Wilson County 4-H Livestock Show & Sale?
The Wilson County 4-H Show and Sale is an annual event where 4-H youth members showcase and auction off their livestock projects. Participants raise hogs or steers and present them for judging based on criteria such as health, appearance, market readiness, and showmanship. Showmanship emphasizes how well participants present and handle their animals in the ring. After the show, the animals are auctioned, with proceeds often going to the participants to support their future 4-H projects or education. The event helps youth develop skills in agriculture, business, public speaking, and animal handling.
What are participant responsibilities?
Participants in the Wilson County 4-H Show and Sale are responsible for:
- Animal Care: Feeding, watering, and ensuring the health of their steer or hog, along veterinary care.
- Housing: Providing a clean, safe, and appropriate living environment for their animal.
- Finding a Breeder: Selecting and sourcing a suitable animal from a breeder (with assistance available if needed).
- Training: Teaching the animal to behave properly in the show ring, focusing on handling and presentation.
- Record Keeping: Tracking expenses, feed, and care details for their project. Completing quality Project Record Books.
- Showmanship: Demonstrating their skills in presenting the animal to judges.
- Following the Rules: Adhering to all event rules and regulations regarding animal care, weight, deadlines, and other requirements.
- Adhering to Deadline Policies: Ensuring all project-related deadlines are met, including registration and submission requirements.
