What is Med Instead of Meds?
Med Instead of Meds is a nutrition and cooking program to encourage healthy eating in efforts to prevent and manage chronic illnesses such as heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.
Researchers studied the traditional eating patterns of those in the Mediterranean region and found significantly lower rates of chronic illnesses. This eating pattern is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, herbs and spices, fish, white meat poultry, and healthy fats such as olive oil. It is NOT about a flavor profile! You can “go Med” by eating Mexican, Indian, and even American foods.
Med Instead of Meds emphasizes the role of our diet in our overall health. Think “Mediterranean instead of medication” or “pans instead of pills.” This program teaches you easy, simple life hacks to “go Med,” offers meal planning and shopping tips, as well as nutritional label reading and portion sizes. Over a period of six classes, you will gain the skills and recipes to live a healthy lifestyle and take control of your health.
Class Dates for Med Instead of Meds
Classes will be held at the Wilson Ag Center from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. All classes include program materials, cooking sessions, and practical resources. Pre-registration required.
- June 24: Intro to the Med Way & Mindful Eating
- July 1: Change your Protein, Meal Planning
- July 8: Swap your Fats & Snacks, Portion Control
- July 15: Increasing Fruits & Vegetables, Mindful Eating
- July 22: Make your Grains Whole, Label Reading
- July 29: Rethink your Sweets, Simple Steps to Physical Activity
Download the registration form to mail in (or email email@example.com) AND pay $30 registration fee. Deadline to register is June 19, 2019. Registration fee is $30 and must be paid in order to register. Please mail or drop off with registration.
