The First Annual Yancey County Youth Livestock Show that took place on Saturday, July 30, 2022 was a resounding success! Overall, this show provided show opportunity for 25 different youth to have a successful livestock show experience.

The youth participants of this year’s show were primarily from Yancey County, but we also had youth participate from Mitchell and Buncombe Counties. Youth participating exhibited 8 dairy steers, 7 goats, 2 feeder hogs, and 1 beef heifer. All youth participants will receive premiums for participating in the show, and some will also receive bonus premiums based upon the show results thanks to $500 in show premiums provided by Carolina Farm Credit of Burnsville.

Each youth participant had the opportunity to participate in livestock showmanship
competition where the show technique and skills exhibited each youth exhibitor was judged. Showmanship classes were split according to the ages of the

The opportunity to participate in showmanship competition was also provided in special classes specifically for several Yancey County youth participants that did not own their own animals, but that had participated in the 1st Yancey County 4-H Livestock Summer Fun Showmanship Camp earlier in the week.

Congratulations to the following youth winners:

weight classes. Class winners were brought back to choose the show champion animal for each species. In market competitions, the quality and characteristics of the animals are the main considerations for judging. Youth participants could enter up to 3 different animals of the same species into market competition, as long as they had qualifying youth exhibitors to exhibit if more than one of their animals were
placed in the same class.

We would like to congratulate the following Yancey County Livestock Show Champions

  • David Banks (Market Hog),
  • Jake Johnson (Dairy Steer),
  • Amelia Smith (Market Goat)

We would also like to congratulate the Following Yancey County Livestock Show Champion Reserve exhibitors

  • David Banks, his hog exhibited by his brother Luke Banks (Market Hog),
  • Cheyenne Wilkinson (Dairy Steer),
  • Daisey Brantley (Market Goat)

All of the Yancey County youth participants will be going on to participate in other shows including the Mountain State Fair. This show provided a great experience for our youth as it was the first time in the show ring for many of them. They will be much better prepared for future shows. The show also gave members of our local community the opportunity to support the youth participants with their projects.

We would also like to thank all those that were involved in making this show happen. I personally cannot wait to bring back the 2nd Annual Yancey County Youth Livestock Show in 2023, and to also to making the show better!
