4-H is the world’s largest youth development organization and provides youth with hands-on workshops and experiences, allowing them to “learn by doing”. Youth can start their 4-H career at the age of 5, participating in the many different project areas offered through 4-H clubs, camps, and county workshops.

Currituck County 4-H is hosting a series of workshops for youth ages 5-7 years old, in February, March, and April. Each of these 4-H “Discovery” workshops will focus on a different program area each month. All participants must pre-register by the pre-registration deadline stated in the workshop descriptions.

The Power of 4-H

Monday, February 18, 2019, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Cooking

Participants will learn  basic cooking skills while making their own soup and sandwich lunch. Youth will also learn about healthy snacks and ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diet. There is a $10 fee for this workshop, and  pre-registration is required, and must be complete before February 14, 2019. For safety reasons, all participants should wear closed-toe shoes and those with long hair will need a hair tie.

Friday, March 15, 2019, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Animal Science

This workshop is designed to introduce participants to a variety of animal science projects. We will visit a farm and see livestock animals, learn about small animals, talk about the jobs animals can have, and learn about the different needs for each animal. There is no fee for this workshop, but pre-registration is required by March 12, 2019. Each child will need to bring money for lunch. We will be stopping at Chick-fil-A in Elizabeth City, NC as we travel to our farm tours.

Friday, April 26, 2019, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Gardening, planting seeds.

April showers bring May flowers. This month is all about the flowers. We will get our flowers going in little pots that can be planted in our flower beds and discuss what plants need to survive. Each participant will take home their plants and plant them in their flower beds. We will also work on some flower art projects. There will be a $10 fee for this workshop, and pre-registration by April 12, 2019. Each child is asked to bring a bag lunch to the workshop.

Pre-registration and workshop fees are required to secure your spot. Fees must be paid 5 days after the online registration is completed. Space is limited so please do not delay in registering your child.

All youth participating in 4-H programs must complete a 4-H enrollment form for the 2019 program year. You can mail the required 4-H forms and registration fee to NCCES 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 2791.

Payments can be made in person at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center or by mailing a check made payable to “Currituck County” to 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 27917. Please include in the memo line the name of the class(es) you wish to attend.

*Class fees are non-refundable except in case of class cancellation.
