When Flooded Turn Around Don't DrownWith the heavy amounts of rain falling across North Carolina, flooding is likely. Flood watches are in effect all across our state which means that conditions are right for flooding to occur. Floods are very dangerous and you should be prepared in the case that you encounter flooding. Stay tuned to local media or weather radio for important updates as they occur.

In addition to heavy rains, windy conditions when combined with wet soils bring the potential for downed trees a limbs. You should be prepared for power outages should they occur.

Locally heavy rain will also reduce visibility and can result in standing water which can make driving dangerous. Slow down and use extra caution.

Some basic flood safety tips include:

  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown! ®
  • Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. You never know what is obscured by the water. Roadways may be completely washed out or contain obstacles or debris.
  • If floodwaters rise around your car but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move to higher ground. Do not leave the car and enter moving water.
  • Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • If you live or work in an area prone to flash flooding, move immediately to higher ground. Don’t wait for flooding to occur because that may be too late.
